If the Moon rises afternoon, so it’s up in the sky AFTER the Sun sets, the moon is waxing. If it’s up before sunrise, it’s waning.
Waxing means the bright chunk of the Moon is getting bigger, going from new (all dark) to full (all bright). Waning means the bright chunk is getting smaller, going from full to new.
