Two points

1) I like Jeffco Public Library more than Denver Public Library. They’re both good, but Jeffco seemed more willing to let me use their study rooms for free (until the pandemic threw a wrench into everything). Denver has better book selection, and they’ll automatically renew books that go overdue. Both good, but I like Jeffco a little more.

2) The books I hold onto for too long never have waiting lines. How many people really need this edition of Henry V? None. I do miss being able to look at the due date cards and see how often a book has been checked out. It was like peering through time.

Early Americans

Who exactly where the first people in the Americas and when did they get here?

Initially, they seemed to be the Clovis people from a site in New Mexico, around 13,000 Years Ago (ya, 11,000 BC). That estimate has been consistently knocked back the longer I’ve followed the issue.

Without major confirmation yet, a group in Mexico has found tools from around 33,000 ya, implying that people got to the Americas around 40,000 ya. They haven’t found human DNA. The fun interpretation is aliens or plant people, but if you want to be boring about it, archeology is really hard and getting DNA from 30k+ ya is really, really hard.

What’s particularly interesting is there doesn’t seem to be 1 group of First Americans. There were many groups of first Americans, and they spread, interacted, and probably traded and made war on each other with human consistency.

Favorites

Anyone else have truly absurd favorites, like favorite oven temp? Mine is 400F. I cook everything at 400. Unless the packaging says something else, it’s getting 400. Even if the packaging does say something else, I probably won’t read it, so the contents get 400 anyway.

Rejection Letters

I finished a job search recently, one that ended without a job. That wound up being for the best, as I quite like my current situation. However, I distinctly recall the endless series of applications and queries, ending usually in silence. That was not fun.

Coming to the end of the other side now, I understand the silence. Writing a few dozen rejection letters a day is a deeply unpleasant process, and its mere necessity is no balm.

I don’t think the silence is right, but I do get it. My delve into this was mild, and for HR people who might have to do it for a living, I have deep sympathy.

The Ford Bronco

I’m incredibly impressed by Ford’s execution of the Bronco. They did it up right. I like the little windows in the doors, the boxiness, and the mechanicals.

In 2022 I’ll be in the market for a new vehicle, and if I can get a manual with that Sasquatch Package the Bronco will be at the top of my list.
