Catching flies

I bought some compost, and now I’ve got flies inside. There’s snow on the ground outside.

These are fairly slow flies, and I can catch them with my bare hands. They’re small though. They survive by going between my fingers. I suppose I could clap really quickly and try to get them that way.

US 10 year yields are now over 1.6%.

Within the last few months, I’ve seen predictions regarding three major levels: 1.15, 1.3, and 1.58 (more specifically, the US S&P 500 dividend yield, which at the time was about 1.58. All numbers percent). All have been blown past, and the market has climbed with only its usual jitter. At every phase, someone predicted the current bull market would die. Rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated.

The yield curve is steepening rapidly. It’s not very steep in absolute terms, with 3mos. yielding basically nothing (0.025% or 2.5 bp; careful about those units) and the 30 year at 2.38%. In relative terms that’s a different of about 100x, but in absolute terms, it’s only ~2.35%. Of course, percentages are inherently relative, but that’s a story for another day. What is key is that steep yield curves are good for bond investors, provided the curve is both steep and stable.

I’ve seen it said that all bear markets are inherently liquidity events. That word ‘all’ makes me squirrelly, but if the ‘all’ is taken out or replaced with a ‘usually’ or ‘often’, perhaps some remark about correlations near 1, that statement does have some truth to it.

I don’t think we’re partying like it’s 1928. I do think we’re partying like 1963 +/- 5 years.

How would I trade that? A push into non-financial assets, tangible assets (like property) being one and IP being another. Of course those lead to inflation, which create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Or spend your money.

Underworld Rules

Movies with underworld rules are weird.

A bunch of criminals come together in a hotel or bar, and the hotel/bar has rules. The criminals obey the rules.

Why?

And invariably, the criminals stop obeying the rules, and people are shocked.

It’s especially weird when a bunch of assassins come together, in the assassin bar, and suddenly they try to kill each other.

Like, they’re assassins. They’re in the assassin bar. This is the most predictable outcome.

Games

I steadily lose interest in games where not playing is the main mechanic. If a board or card game is based around forcing people to skip turns, I discover I can skip turns just as easily by not playing. Likewise in a video game, if the main mechanic is stopping people from doing things and being stopped in turn, I can not do things easier and better by uninstalling the game.

SEO spammer

One of my spammers works like this:

The Spamming Entity (SE) creates a java script page that links to LC. A link appears in my logs, and if I check that link, I get the spam pitch for SEO.

It’s not even exactly spam because I’m going there.

Top marks for creativity.

I only mean to brag a little, but I am one of the great circuit board destroyers of all time.

If you’ve got a circuit board, I can break it.

I don’t even have to try. It comes naturally. If you think you have a circuit board that’s completely idiot proof, I am the better idiot. If a circuit board is marked unbreakable, it has not yet been tested against me. I can break things in new and imaginative styles. I can break a two-component board in more than three ways. I’m frankly astounding. Be amazed.

In an unrelated note, I design circuits for a living. Results are mixed.
